Cherry Desiree Ortega Hamrick 1958 ~ 2006 Cherry Desiree Ortega Hamrick, 47, a gifted master teacher, passed away at her home in Riverton Wednesday, March 15, 2006 of complications from asthma. Cherry was born August 12, 1958 in Salt Lake City to Paul J. and Elna Dahlquist Ortega. She spent her childhood in Mt. View, Wyoming. She attended Snow College, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Westminster College in Elementary Education. She then received her Master's Degree in Special Education with a gifted and talented endorsement from the University of Utah. Cherry has touched the lives of hundreds of children and families throughout her 25 year teaching career. She was well known for her creativity and her artistic ability. She made specially decorated Ukrainian eggs, and received prizes for many of them. Cherry co-authored a book with the renowned Jon Kabat-Zinn. Aside from her children at school, her main love was her Siamese cats. She raised many grand champions and provided a loving home for many more. Survived by mother Elna and A.J. Fackrell; sister Paula (Mick) Jensen; brothers, Boyce Ortega and Bryant (Dana) Ortega; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her father, Paul. She also leaves behind her beloved cats, Azul, Cherry Chocolate, Junie Jon Jones (who went to school to visit her students frequently) and Trinket.
